The best advice I can give is don’t use them. I have had a web shop and now have a Business Hosting Plan. They put several restictions on each plan forcing you to upgrade for such things as additional msql databases. Get a problem and you will be emailing a variety of poor mannered assistants who repeat previous replies and fail to read your email questions. I changed plan by email and ended up spending hours on the phone to a variety of customer support assistants.
I now have another problem with them and as I write this I have just convinced myself I am stupid to stay with them. I shall brave the hassle and take my business elsewhere.

The very first web address I ever registered was with 1&1 and now I regret it very much. I had forgotten that I even had the account

Couple of days ago I got a call from a collection agency. I thought it was a scam at first, but it turns out that 1&1 had sent my account to collections (the card I had them on expired quite some time ago).

Of course, I’d never heard anything from 1&1 about this, but my email does work because I get a bunch of adds from them. So I contact 1&1 asking what this is about. After finally getting to the supervisor, he informs me that they sent me 3 emails, and called my house to let us know of this debt, before I was sent to collections.

Thing is, my wife and I have a very nice collection of all the emails we get, for situations just like this, so I have him walk me through the date for each one. Funny thing, although I got email on those days, it wasn’t from 1&1.

I tried to work with him, from the beginning I was willing to pay the original amount, but not the late fees, but as their billing supervisor put it, “we have enough to show legally we tried to contact you.” In other words our computers shows we tried, and our lawyers will back it up.

So if you’d like good customer service and a good product 1&1 is NOT the way to go. On the other hand if you’re really looking for legality and poor customer service you’re going to love 1&1.

I am so glad i went whit hostgator for the rest of my sites, nothing but a good experience so far.

Enjoy,

I canceled service with 1&1 internet, by transferring an internet domain from 1&1 to Godaddy.

Following that, I never heard a word from 1&1.

In November, I recieved a letter from a collections agency who is attempting to collect $25.94. When pressed, they claim I was delinquent on $6.95 from 1&1, and the balance is a collections fee.

At this point, I had not received a single e-mail, fax, or letter from 1&1 regarding any late invoice – ESPECIALLY considering I canceled the service, and I was extremely confused considering the domain I had was $6.95 a month.

I spoke with 1&1. She explained that although the domain was transferred, the actual cancellation of the domain hosting was processed 5 days after the renewal date, thus explaining why I owed $6.95.

She could not explain why I did not receive any communications, other than to say they send out a “SINGLE” e-mail, and if the bill is not paid, then the collections process starts. I did not receive the e-mail, and even if I did, I asked how would I know to pay it since I had canceled the service. Why do they not send a warning notice?

She had no responses to this, other than to tell me I had to pay the full $25.94 to the collections agency.

I am the President of a Technology company, and for an innovator like 1&1 to treat their customers like this – that’s a real travesty.

In speaking with the collection agency, they told me they process all 1&1 claims, that there is no point in talking to them, and that my credit would be ruined if I did not pay the $25.94.

This entire process – to be honest – reeks of fraud and mis-representation. How many other consumers are getting mis-treated like this. Doesn’t 1&1 have a legal duty to communicate with the consumer before taking on $17 in fees and sending you to collections.

By their own admissions, they send a single e-mail and then send to collections. Non-withstanding the collections practices, is it legal for a company to charge you for a full year of services when you have already cancelled them and the only delay is “PROCESSING TIME” which is under their control.

It all seems very unethical to me.

1and1.com did the same thing to me – they sent me to collections all while I was talking to them trying to figure out why my account had been locked. I was told my expiration date on my credit card expired, and that they had emailed me but the email came back to them as undeliverable. So I went in and updated my credit card info, and they never tried to re-charge my card as they stated they would. So I called again to find out why they weren’t charging me, and they said – well, we sent your account to collections. I asked to speak to a manager and they said, they won’t be able to help you – it’s already in collections. Why would 1and1 send me to collections after I had talked with them and updated my credit card information? All the while after they told me they sent one email and it was returned undeliverable to them.

So I called the collection agency and was charged an additional 18.95 on top of things for the collection agency fees.

The collection agency guy told me that 1and1 screws all of it’s customers… (YES, they said that…)

But I’m still out 18.95 now…. and it’s NOT MY FAULT.

I dont know what to do – but it seems illegal… especially while I was in contact with 1and1 during this time.

they never called, or sent me a hard copy letter, only sent one email which 1and1 said came back to them undeliverable. Other than that, I had no notification – I only found out that my account was locked by accident one day when my website disappeared.

BUYERS BEWARE!

Like others on this thread I was also sent to collections (without my knowledge) for a pre-paid hosting account that I was rung through the ringer when trying to cancel. Instead of just closing my account they sent me to collections. I found out about the collection over a year later when I was trying to qualify for a mortgage. My credit was spotless and my FICO was above 800 prior to this issue. Needless to say this sunk my FICO into the 500′s and lenders now don’t want to touch me because I have this $30 collection on my credit history. I’ve spent over two weeks on the phone and writing letters and emails with 1and1 and NCO (the credit agency) trying to resolve the issue with no luck. I’m now working with an attorney to try to get this resolved.

I too was sent to collections after canceling my account through 1an1. Apparently they don’t like you to leave their service and make it extremely difficult to do so. I thought my account was cancelled correctly and did not find out otherwise until I received a letter from a collections agency. What’s more, they now want to charge me an additional three months because they claim the account is still not closed correctly even though they cut off access to it when they sent it to collections. No one from 1and1 will even return my emails or phone calls. I am now consulting with an attorney and the Better Business Bureau.

I just got my collection letter for $8.99. Hadn’t had a late payment on my credit report in over 12 years!!! I am going to go ballistic on them when they open this morning. Anyone interested in class action for the cost of fixing our credit reports plus whatever other damages?

I will let you know how it goes today (although I don’t expect much).

I liked this service up until today. I have 5 sites and 24 domains through them and I am moving them all today. So stupid on their part.

Yup… no help at all. Fun to hear them squirm knowing that they were being recorded though. They said the right to screw us was written in the user agreement. I have to go re-read that.

I’ll echo what everyone else has said here about this company having by far the very WORST billing and “customer service” I’ve ever experienced with a company – I’m a the point of considering legal action and filing a compliant with the Attorney General’s office.

In summary, they botched my billing for months due to an error with THEIR BILLING SYSTEM that refused to accept my updated credit card info.

Never a late notice, nothing – just suddenly bombarded with letters from NCO – which I believe they own!! Then they add inslut to injury by locking all my domains.

How do I know it was a problem with their billing system?

Because a ‘Compliant Supervisor’ acknowledged the problem and told me it was THEIR error, not mine. She issues me a credit and tells me that the problem “will never happen again.” WRONG.

Two months later, same thing happens!! My domains are locked and NCO again. Why? Because their billing system is AGAIN billing an old credit card I was told was no longer in their system.

But this time – no one wants to do anything!! A “Compliant Supervisor – Damion Son” even had the gaul to tell me “sorry, there is nothing I can do.” WHAT????

Since then I have written and sent no fewer than a dozen emails and afxes to their corporate offices, Germany, and compliants personeel with a letter detailing what the problem is.

NO RESPONSE – except for more canned responses from Mr. Son.

This company is beyond pathetic – take your business to a company that cares and knows how to treat its customers.

I’d like to file a class action lawsuit against this company. Anyone with me?

1and1 is ruining people’s credit if people let their subscription expire. That’s crazy! I have plenty of hosting accounts on the internet, so I am very familiar with hosting policies. When a subscription expires, and your card is expired, your prepay doesn’t go through. That then cancels the account.

But I guess 1and1 finds that it’s profitable to threaten people with a collection agency if they don’t prepay for the next term without clicking the ‘cancel’ button, which is not even available on your control panel!

Anyone else think this is an unfair business practice? I think we should contact the Abbey Spanier law firm and file a class action lawsuit!

Exact same experience here… tried repeatedly to cancel a 1and1 account, cancelled the credit card that was paying for it, and was sent to collections. This is a horrible business practice, if it’s even legal.

I’d love to start or join a class action if this is possible.

I started a thread on this at Slashdot… http://slashdot.org/submission/1121164/Fight-aggressive-auto-renewal-billing-practices. If enough other people turn up who are victims of this, maybe we can get something doing on the legal front.

Contrary to the above threads, I have worked with 1and1 for years and never had a problem. I have 6 websites hosted by them and am completely satisfied. I have had to cancel two website accounts with no problems. Any money owed to me was credited in a timely manner. Sorry that I cannot corroborate your experiences. I guess that i am the exception.

Apparently I am in the minority. I have had a 1&1 account for several years now and have no complaints. After reading all the negative feedback, I began to wonder if they were put up by competing companies to steer you away from 1&1.

I host 3 domains currently and have canceled 2 in the past with no issues. I have also, twice, misspelled the new domain names and they have credited back and made the necessary changes with no problem.

I have also cut up some credit cards in the past to reduce the amount of cards I have and never notified 1&1 that the card was no good anymore. They notified me by email that payment was not made on the card on file. I called them up, gave them the new card, end of story.

All this to say, they have been willing to accommodate me in every way. The Customer Service has been a very good experience and the quality of their Hosting is excellent.

I have to wonder if (some) reviewer aren’t taking out their own inadequacies on 1&1?
