Apparently I am in the minority. I have had a 1&1 account for several years now and have no complaints. After reading all the negative feedback, I began to wonder if they were put up by competing companies to steer you away from 1&1.

I host 3 domains currently and have canceled 2 in the past with no issues. I have also, twice, misspelled the new domain names and they have credited back and made the necessary changes with no problem.

I have also cut up some credit cards in the past to reduce the amount of cards I have and never notified 1&1 that the card was no good anymore. They notified me by email that payment was not made on the card on file. I called them up, gave them the new card, end of story.

All this to say, they have been willing to accommodate me in every way. The Customer Service has been a very good experience and the quality of their Hosting is excellent.

I have to wonder if (some) reviewer aren't taking out their own inadequacies on 1&1?

Contrary to the above threads, I have worked with 1and1 for years and never had a problem. I have 6 websites hosted by them and am completely satisfied. I have had to cancel two website accounts with no problems. Any money owed to me was credited in a timely manner. Sorry that I cannot corroborate your experiences. I guess that i am the exception.

Exact same experience here... tried repeatedly to cancel a 1and1 account, cancelled the credit card that was paying for it, and was sent to collections. This is a horrible business practice, if it's even legal.

I'd love to start or join a class action if this is possible.

I started a thread on this at Slashdot… http://slashdot.org/submission/1121164/Fight-aggressive-auto-renewal-billing-practices. If enough other people turn up who are victims of this, maybe we can get something doing on the legal front.

I'd like to file a class action lawsuit against this company. Anyone with me?

1and1 is ruining people's credit if people let their subscription expire. That's crazy! I have plenty of hosting accounts on the internet, so I am very familiar with hosting policies. When a subscription expires, and your card is expired, your prepay doesn't go through. That then cancels the account.

But I guess 1and1 finds that it's profitable to threaten people with a collection agency if they don't prepay for the next term without clicking the 'cancel' button, which is not even available on your control panel!

Anyone else think this is an unfair business practice? I think we should contact the Abbey Spanier law firm and file a class action lawsuit!

I'll echo what everyone else has said here about this company having by far the very WORST billing and "customer service" I've ever experienced with a company - I'm a the point of considering legal action and filing a compliant with the Attorney General's office.

In summary, they botched my billing for months due to an error with THEIR BILLING SYSTEM that refused to accept my updated credit card info.

Never a late notice, nothing - just suddenly bombarded with letters from NCO - which I believe they own!! Then they add inslut to injury by locking all my domains.

How do I know it was a problem with their billing system?

Because a 'Compliant Supervisor' acknowledged the problem and told me it was THEIR error, not mine. She issues me a credit and tells me that the problem "will never happen again." WRONG.

Two months later, same thing happens!! My domains are locked and NCO again. Why? Because their billing system is AGAIN billing an old credit card I was told was no longer in their system.

But this time - no one wants to do anything!! A "Compliant Supervisor - Damion Son" even had the gaul to tell me "sorry, there is nothing I can do." WHAT????

Since then I have written and sent no fewer than a dozen emails and afxes to their corporate offices, Germany, and compliants personeel with a letter detailing what the problem is.

NO RESPONSE - except for more canned responses from Mr. Son.

This company is beyond pathetic - take your business to a company that cares and knows how to treat its customers.

Yup... no help at all. Fun to hear them squirm knowing that they were being recorded though. They said the right to screw us was written in the user agreement. I have to go re-read that.

I just got my collection letter for $8.99. Hadn't had a late payment on my credit report in over 12 years!!! I am going to go ballistic on them when they open this morning. Anyone interested in class action for the cost of fixing our credit reports plus whatever other damages?

I will let you know how it goes today (although I don't expect much).

I liked this service up until today. I have 5 sites and 24 domains through them and I am moving them all today. So stupid on their part.

I too was sent to collections after canceling my account through 1an1. Apparently they don't like you to leave their service and make it extremely difficult to do so. I thought my account was cancelled correctly and did not find out otherwise until I received a letter from a collections agency. What's more, they now want to charge me an additional three months because they claim the account is still not closed correctly even though they cut off access to it when they sent it to collections. No one from 1and1 will even return my emails or phone calls. I am now consulting with an attorney and the Better Business Bureau.

Like others on this thread I was also sent to collections (without my knowledge) for a pre-paid hosting account that I was rung through the ringer when trying to cancel. Instead of just closing my account they sent me to collections. I found out about the collection over a year later when I was trying to qualify for a mortgage. My credit was spotless and my FICO was above 800 prior to this issue. Needless to say this sunk my FICO into the 500's and lenders now don't want to touch me because I have this $30 collection on my credit history. I've spent over two weeks on the phone and writing letters and emails with 1and1 and NCO (the credit agency) trying to resolve the issue with no luck. I'm now working with an attorney to try to get this resolved.

1and1.com did the same thing to me - they sent me to collections all while I was talking to them trying to figure out why my account had been locked. I was told my expiration date on my credit card expired, and that they had emailed me but the email came back to them as undeliverable. So I went in and updated my credit card info, and they never tried to re-charge my card as they stated they would. So I called again to find out why they weren't charging me, and they said - well, we sent your account to collections. I asked to speak to a manager and they said, they won't be able to help you - it's already in collections. Why would 1and1 send me to collections after I had talked with them and updated my credit card information? All the while after they told me they sent one email and it was returned undeliverable to them.

So I called the collection agency and was charged an additional 18.95 on top of things for the collection agency fees.

The collection agency guy told me that 1and1 screws all of it's customers... (YES, they said that...)

But I'm still out 18.95 now.... and it's NOT MY FAULT.

I dont know what to do - but it seems illegal... especially while I was in contact with 1and1 during this time.

they never called, or sent me a hard copy letter, only sent one email which 1and1 said came back to them undeliverable. Other than that, I had no notification - I only found out that my account was locked by accident one day when my website disappeared.
